Amid the scare of growth rates going sour and a slowdown crippling the economy, new hiring trends have emerged from the placement season at B-schools, across the country

As the placement season started for business management graduates of the year 2009, there were doomsday theories that prophesised a low point in campus hiring; one that would seem starker when compared to the previous years of guts and glory at B-schools. However, as the overall picture emerges, there have been departures from the past, some unusual hiring trends, unexpected visitors and ‘correction’ in compensation but not the bloodbath that was predicted.
Experts point out that while many students still await placements, the initial signs are very encouraging. Premiere institutes like IIM - Calcutta, XLRI – Bubhaneshwar, IIM – Bangalore reported 100 per cent placements, while still others like ISB, Hyderabad and IIPM, Delhi, claimed that the placement process will continue till the last of their students were placed. “We have a body of 88 people, who work round the year on placements, some of them typically target the UAE, South East and European market. Our placement ‘season’ starts in December and ends in May. Last year, we got 600 companies on campus, but this year, some of our biggest recruiters, ADAG, ICICI, HDFC Bank, etc. were recruiting far fewer people. So, we realised that we need many more companies, because so far, we relied heavily on a few companies picking up huge numbers. So, we revamped our placement team and added more people to it, and decided to target atleast 750-800 companies this year. Last year, our international placements were 165. But this year, keeping the situation in mind, we are hoping to touch 100,” says Arindam Chaudhari, dean, IIPM. “ISB approached Public Sector Units (PSUs), national banks, entrepreneurial ventures, etc,” explains Bhuvana Ramalingam, senior director, communications at ISB. Rohan Mahajan, external relations secretary, IIM Calcutta adds that this year, in particular, PSUs and other good but lower paying jobs, were more aggressively pursued, to keep up with the times. XLRI, Bubhaneshwar also reiterated the trend of increased visibility of PSUs and attributed it to the 6th Pay Commission. Suvid Anand, secretary, placement committee explains, “The distinct element in recruitments, this season, was the active participation of PSUs.”
A freeze on hiring during a downturn is often necessary to ensure a company’s current profitability and future competitiveness. Counteracting these tendencies requires creativity, which B-Schools are showing by using the recession mantra of doing more with less, but doing it better.
Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri, IIPM Dean shares his inputs on the trends that are bound to catch up, during the placement season:
How different has the placement process been this year?
Most B-schools are inviting more companies to visit their campus; the placement time has been stretched. In our case, we have a larger placement team; we went to Tier 2 and 3 towns. We approached SMEs. Our mentoring programme was much more rigorous this year. We’re expecting almost 750 companies to visit by the time our placement season is over.
Are there any key trends that you have noticed?
The banks haven’t really stopped hiring. Insurance companies were as big as last year. IT companies are still visiting campuses across the country. The manufacturing sector has been a huge support and the SMEs have proved to be a boon for students.
Were there any surprises?
Some companies that are firing at the mid and higher levels are hiring at the entry level. Also, it was surprising to note that international companies in the service sector hired despite the slowdown, to prepare for economic recovery.
Lessons from the frontier
Whether in recession or not, one should make a career choice and not a ‘job’ choice. Career choices call for a long-term perspective. The industry one wants to work in, or the function one wants to choose should be given priority instead of salary figures.
Network tactfully.
Clearly articulate your value. The interviews will go much better when the person hiring can clearly see what your experience could do for them.

Tackling Logical Reasoning of MH CET

THE LOGIC SECTION IN THE CET IS UNIQUE, DUE TO THE INCLUSION OF VISUAL REASONING AND SYLLOGISMS, WHICH CONSTITUTE THE CHUNK OF QUESTIONS. AJEET KHURANA PROVIDES TIPS ON ACING THE SECTION

As we enter the final fortnight prior to the MBA/ MMS-CET, students need to prioritise their efforts. Should they study new topics? What should they focus on? Is it only about solving mock tests? Let’s take a look at how students can make the best use of their time in these last few days.
A quick glance at the pattern of the CET indicates the obvious next step:
Not only is logic the most important section, it is also the most difficult. Students in the high-score band (ie 135+ out of 200) can improve their scores, primarily in the syllogism and visual reasoning sections of the CET. Visual reasoning is the toughest question-type in the CET. (A detailed description of the logic section in the CET is provided in the table, ‘CET Logic: A Closer View’ below)
When compared to other easy MBA entrance exams, the CET is not significantly different, when it comes to English and math. But the logic section can appear to have been conceived from an alternate universe. Hence, students who crack the CAT and are admitted to IIM-A, often do not make it to Jamnalal Bajaj (and vice versa). That is why focusing on logic is the best use of your time in these last two weeks.

HOW DOES ONE IMPROVE IN CET LOGIC?

To begin with, it is necessary to understand that logic scores can improve overnight. This is unlike English or math that are time-intensive. Logic is primarily based on your openmindedness, observation and approach. You could keep practicing, and your score might not change. Then one fine day, you just might start scoring well. Here are some of the methods through which you can improve your logic scores:
Familiarise yourself with CET-like logic questions
Attempt to mimic the thinking process of those who score well in the logic section

HOW MUCH DOES ONE NEED TO SCORE?

Admission to the best MBA/ MMS-CET based institute, ie Jamnalal Bajaj requires approximately 150 out of 200 marks in the CET. So, if your performance in English and math gives you 75-80 marks out of 100, then CET Logic should give you the remaining. This means that your target score in logic is about 70 out of 100. The targeted split could be 12/30 in visuals, 13/20 in syllogism and 45/50 in the rest.

Tackling the CET Paper (English Section)

With CET exam just around the corner now it’s become imperative that one should have the knowledge of how questions are being asked in the previous years of CET paper and how one should go about it.

Relatively Easy English: In the CET exam as compared to other MBA entrance exam the English part of the question is relatively easy. Hence a good command over the English will fetch you a good marks in the paper just one needs to brush up with the basics regarding this such as from word filling to antonyms/synonyms , arrangement of sentences .

This is how previous years CET English paper stands out with regards to the English section.

· In 2005, the test had one reading comprehension passage with 15 questions following it.

· In 2005 also introduced a new question type of direct-indirect speech.

· 2006 asked 16 vocabulary questions, well above the previous maximum of 10 questions.

· 2007 did not throw any manor surprised, except for five questions that tested your ability to spell

· In 2008 it had 25 grammar-based questions. That was not a big surprise in itself, except that several of these were the ‘spot the error’ kind of questions, and there were actually no errors! So, the correct answer was option number 5 i.e., ‘no error’. If you have attempted the CET, you know that the ‘no error’ option can be disconcerting, as it leaves you feeling that you might have overlooked the actual error.

· The ideal score in this section would be to score more than 40 out of 50 questions asked.
